  • The Fleet Library of the Rhode Island School of Design is an example of the successful synergy of preservation, engineering, and programming. The library is located in the main hall of the historic Hospital Trust Bank building situated in downtown Providence. It houses an extensive collection of art and design volumes, magazines, and multimedia resources, as well as group study areas, classrooms, a café, and administrative offices. Preserving and restoring the unique character of this historic interior was our imperative goal. However, because the programmatic needs of the library superseded what the hall, in its original state, could accommodate, architectural intervention became abso- lutely necessary and integral to the preservation. In addition, revitalizing the building to update its accessibility, mechanical, and fire safety conditions called for the careful implementation of engineering to prevent the space from becoming obsolete. Thus, the approach for the RISD library incorporated not one, but three distinct architectural tactics: preservation, engineering, and architectural intervention.

  • Office dA is a Boston-based architecture and design firm led since 1991 by principal partners Monica Ponce de Leon and Nader Tehrani. The firm’s work ranges in scale from furniture to urban design and infrastructure, with a focus on architecture. Office dA seizes on the challenges unique to each project—the peculiarities of a site, requirements of program, and the specifics of a target audience—as the catalysts for transformation in architecture. An investigation of the potentials of materials and construction techniques, often imported from fields outside of architecture, is the foundation for every design. Office dA explores unique material qualities in conjunction with both traditional and digital techniques of design and assembly, and resolves every project to a high level of detail. Office dA’s simultaneous rigor and sensitivity have allowed the firm to develop a portfolio of projects around the world—from Boston to Caracas to Beijing— which uniquely marry local craft and tradition to global and contemporary techniques.
